VERTICAL CAMPUS: IZMIR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

VERTICAL ALLEY

New trends in university campus design increasingly show a turn towards the vertical urban campus. Today most universities are going vertical rather than horizontal, changing their image horizontal to vertical, suburban to urban, closed to open. Comparing to the conventional horizontal campus program which is generally has an alley that connects different faculties, the design idea is creating a vertical alley instead of horizontal. By creating the vertical alley similar to the conventional horizontal departments for different social activities.

Considering the dense pedestrian flow to the site the idea was creating a large public square on the site where the Kordon line ends. In order to achieve this the footprint area of the building is as small as possible with respect to the historical buildings on the site.
