VERTICAL CAMPUS: IZMIR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

COMPLEXITY VIA MINIMALITY

Analyzing the site, I noticed that the region has an highly eclectic quality. Through the region there is a richness in terms of materials, colors, forms, tissues etc. Starting from this point I wanted to response all the complexity existing there with a minimalistic approach. While designing I utilized three basic geometric shapes: a right-angled triangle, a square and a circle. Other than these, as our site is located at a critical point between the Alsancak Train Station and Kordon, I wanted to create a public square via our site. Under this square there is an auditorium which is also open to public use.The school occupies a square shaped footprint. Between the school and the public square, ı designed a sunken street which connects the sunken auditorium to the main building while creating a social space. Under this street, there is also an production street belonging to the use of students.
