VERTICAL CAMPUS: IZMIR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

HORIZONTAL VS. VERTICAL

Horizontal campus type is the most common type of educational campus. However, nowadays architecture is tend to give a chance reverse thinking of design. Horizontal to vertical, suburban to urban, closed to open, formal to informal, fixed to flexible and multi-functional, the new designs of campus are more likely tring to extend campus-bound activities.

Our area in which we design a vertical campus of a School of Visual and Performing Arts is located on Kordon Line ahead. As existing of continuation, my design idea comes through façades of Kordon Line. However, Kordon Line has a very horizontal sense that is actually opposite to our aim. There is still a conflict in vertical design -as there is in our minds. So, in order not to create a sudden conflict in existing topology, I use horizontality as a tool aiming verticality.
